I've read in a seed starter book to soak your corn seeds overnight. Like sugary types like ruby queen. If this is true, what benefit does it have?

The first step in germination is for the seed to absorb water. Corn seeds have a tough outer coat, and it can take a few, to several days, for the seed to soak up the required moisture before germination can begin in earnest. Soaking corn overnight will promote faster sprouting because the seeds will imbibe as much water as possible during the process. If you soak seeds longer than 24 hours, you'll be excluding oxygen, another important element in the germination process, so be sure to remove them from the water and plant them right away.
