The Q&A Archives: When To Prune Azaleas

Question: When should azaleas be pruned, and how much?

Answer: Azaleas should be pruned immediately after flowering, to allow new shoots and flower buds to develop over the summer months. If your plant is very overgrown, plan on taking 2-3 years to reduce its size. If you just want to tidy it up a bit, you can take about 1/3 of the growth off without harming the plant.
