The Q&A Archives: Using Round-Up on Asparagus Beds

Question: I have a 20 yr.old aspargus bed which I want to use Round-up on to remove all weeds. Can I cut the stems down to ground level, cover with a handful of dirt, and then spray remaining weeds? We will not be harvesting again until next spring. John Schwenn Walworth, WI.

Answer: If your asparagus bed is producing well, I would recommend against using Round-Up because it will kill the asparagus plants along with the weeds. If you wish to start over in the same location, you can use the Round-Up this season and plant your asparagus next year. Or you could lay down black plastic between the rows to smother the weeds and cover it with mulch, and then pull the weeds directly around your asparagus plants.
