In my experience, evergreen hollies are best planted in the spring because this allows them time to establish a good root system before winter. Since they are evergreen, they lose moisture through their foliage all winter and it is important that they be well watered through the fall; the better their roots, the better they are able to absorb that moisture in the fall.

Deciduous hollies can be planted in fall or spring.
