Can you prune a confederate rose?

Pam,

Yes you can. However it really doesn't need pruning in most cases except perhaps to control height of the plant. Since they bloom in late summer to fall it is pruned in late winter or early spring. Many years a hard freeze will kill it to the ground and it is pruned back to just above the soil line. It then will re-emerge from the soil and bloom the following late summer.
