I have read that Malus (Crab apples) do not always flower every year and that there are many problems with them.
I am in Canadian zone 4b, Montreal, zone 5 US, I believe.

Would I be better served with choices other than Malus--say Syringa (lilac) or other trouble free trees?

Thanks

Most of the newer crabapples flower reliably and are disease resistant. Try 'Centennial' if you want fruit or 'Floribunda' if you're just interested in flowers. 'Floribunda' doesn't set fruit but is a great pollinizer for other crabapples. If you have room, grow both! They perform well in USDA zones 3-9.
