Hardy hibiscus or shrub althea (Hibiscus syriacus) can be cut back as hard as needed to shape or control size as long as you do it early in the season. It may be done from winter into mid spring. This shrub blooms on the new growth of the season so pruning during the summer will remove the flowering wood.
