Can you identify a shrub (old fashioned) called "Weeping Mary" which is very similar to the common butterfly bush or buddlei which has a more weeping habit than the butterfly bush and lavender blooms about the same length but not as big around? This shrub spreads from the roots like a forsythia and grows about 4' wide x 4' tall. Very hardy. |
Based on your description I suspect you are describing a form of Lespedeza thunbergii. This plant is hardy to zone 4, and grows much as you described. Although I have seen it grown in many old fashioned gardens I have not heard it called Weeping Mary as a common name. There is a photo of the bloom at the Wayside Gardens site. Wayside Gardens P.O.
