| Is there any minimal depth required in a raised vegetable garden bed. I had a depth of 10 inches with no problems. I am now re-doing it with an 8 inch depth. I am placing a wire mesh underneath to control the moles (i cant get rid of). The mesh has about 1 cm squares, so the roots could grow further if they require. I guess my main concern is with root vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes, beets.... I also dont want the depth to stunt any growth or production of the other plants. |
| Certainly, the deeper the better in terms of the root crops as you have surmised. Would it be possible to loosen the soil below the bed and thus set the wire a bit deeper in one or more areas specifically intended to accommodate them? Alternatively, you could mound the soil higher than the actual edges of the beds. If the sides are sloped steeply enough there will be minimal erosion. Lastly, you could try growing some of the smaller varieties of carrots, for instance, to fit better in shallower soil and consider using a tall cylinder of wire mesh for the potatoes.
