I have a deck and the front of it is bare. I want a low spreading shrub that will cover just the front of the deck but not the railing. The area is in partial shade all day and has sort of sandy soil.

There are many attractive shrubs for shady sites. Try Buxus (boxwood), Daphne odora (winter daphne), Euonymus fortunei, Gaultheria or azalea. Or, consider some of the taller spreading groundcovers such as vinca minor (grows to about 10" in height), Houttuynia cordata, or Galium odoratum (sweet woodruff). All should perform well in sandy soil provided they're watered well during hot spells. Enjoy!
