Silver maples can be very difficult when it comes to establishing a ground cover. These trees block light and rain from reaching the ground and their roots are greedy for moisture and nutrients. You might have success with English ivy or Vinca minor, then add color by using some large containers filled with annuals. When you plant the ground cover, take care to improve the soil with lots of organic matter in the planting holes to try to get the new plants off to a good start.
