The Q&A Archives: Care Pruning Of Oakleaf Hydrangea

Question: I planted several oakleaf hydrangea last spring and some grew to 4 feet in height. Should they be pruned and when?

Answer: Oakleaf hydrangeas (H quercifolia) can grow to be very large plants, generally in the six foot high and even wider range. The plants bloom only on the previous year's wood, so routine pruning is best avoided if possible.
