The Q&A Archives: Fertilizing Hosta

Question: What type of fertilizer do I use on Hostas and when and how often should they be fertilized?

Answer: Hostas do well in average to rich soil with ample moisture during the growing season. They may be given a complete fertilizer such as 10-10-10 granular according to the label instructions in early spring and/or a top dressing of compost. If you would like a more specific analysis you would need to run some basic soil tests to check fertility and pH. Your county extension should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results.
