The Q&A Archives: Searching for a Shade-Loving Flowering Shrub

Question: I am looking for a shrub that will flower throughout the summer in the shade. I would like to use it as a privacy screen along the fence. I need something that will thrive with very little or no direct sun. Thanks for your help.

Answer: Most shrubs that grow well in shade don't flower all summer long. Annual flowers such as impatiens and begonias will provide summer flowers, but of course, they did back each year and don't grow tall. For a privacy screen in a low light area, I'dselect rhododendrons. They flowers in spring, are evergreen and make a nice informal hedge, getting up to 8-10 feet tall. Check your local garden center for selections and other choices.
