Many plants that would need indoor starting for spring planting do not necessarily need that treatment for a fall harvest. Fall planting is scheduled by counting backwards from the average frost date. Count back the expected time to harvest and add about two more weeks to compensate for the shorter days and cooler temperatures of fall. That gives you a rough idea of when to start the seeds in the garden.
