The Q&A Archives: Lilacs Infected W/tiny Black Insect

Question: For the last 3 yrs. 4 of our lilacs have had tiny black insects at bloom time. They are planted in a row. ...what pest control would be effective in eliminating them. thanks...

Answer: Lilacs can be attacked by scale insects, but these are visible all year around. Without knowing specifically what the pest is, it's hard to make a recommendation for control. How about taking a sample of the problem to your local Cooperative Extension office or Master Gardener Clinic for positive identification and some control options? Contact WSU Cooperative Extension at 206-296-3900 for a list of Master Gardener Clinic locations.
