The Q&A Archives: Butterfly Bush Care

Question: I heard you must prune a butterfly bush back by March first. I live in zone five. Last year I pruned it about 6 inches from the ground and it did fine.

Thanks for your help,

Answer: Butterfly Bush, also known as Buddleia davidii, blooms on new growth. Therefore, stems should be pruned back in early spring to encourage large, lush flower spikes. Prune to about 6" above ground level.
