The Q&A Archives: Early Buds On Clematis

Question: received clematis seedling in plastic bag with soil how can i maintain until planting time in may. thank you

Answer: If the plant was shipped to you by a mail order supplier, then follow the instructions you received with the plant. Generally, such a plant would be purchased in a dormant state and would be planted immediately. That, way it can remain dormant until weather conditions are right for it to wake up naturally with the season.

If the plant has been indoors and the buds have already begun to open, and if the weather is below freezing, then you will need to protect the plant. You could possibly plant it in a pot and set the pot in very bright light indoors (but in a cool location) until the weather settles.

Ideally, you would set the pot outside whenever possible, placing it in a sunny, sheltered location, and bring it indoors only when extremely cold weather (ie below freezing) occurs.
