The Q&A Archives: Locating Cordyline Australis

Question: I'm looking for single trunked palm like tree that does not grow too tall and can withstand occassional temperatures of 15 degrees in the winter. Is this a good candidate and where can I locate it?

Answer: Cordyline australis (also called Dracaena australis) is a rather stiff looking, multiple-trunked plant with a mature height of 20'-30'. It will withstand temperatures of 15F. You can train it to a single trunk but it's more attractive with several trunks. You can prune it back to keep it somewhat smaller. If it still sounds like something you'd like for your garden, a source might be Canyon Creek Nursery, 3527 Dry Creek Rd., Oroville, CA 95965. (Phone 916-533-2166).
