I left the withered leaves on my irises all winter, but now that it's spring, when should I cut them to avoid slugs and allow the plants to make their new growth for the year. My areas frost free date is April 22. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

It is a good idea to remove any iris foliage that is withered or discolored as soon as it occurs. This helps reduce the risk of any pest or disease carrying over. Usually, some leaves are removed during fall clean up and additional leaves are removed in the spring as soon as you can get into the beds to do it. Continue tidying the plants as needed throughout the season.
