I have a walkway, lined with flowerbeds on the side of the house. It runs north-south. Garage is on the west and tall fence line growth on east. It gets 3-4 hours of the hottest midday sun. It burns shade plants, like hostas, but isn't sunny enough for sun plants, like roses and delpheniums. Anemones, columbine, mallow, rhodedendrums didn't work. Ferns are burnt. Any ideas? We are willing to use a pergola with vines to provide shade, would that work? |
That is a tough location. Most plants that take partial shade prefer morning or late sun, with protection from the hot mid-day. You might try coleus, pansies, salvias, snapdragon, gaillardia (blanketflower), and monarda. Use a layer of mulch to help maintain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Clematis might work for you on a pergola, because they like their roots in the shade, but their tops in the sun. |
