Compost is made by accumulating plant materials and allowing them to break down. You could simply pile up whatever organic material you have available and eventually it will make compost. Note that composting does not occur during very cold weather and that the time frame will depend on the mix of ingredients you use.

To speed the natural composting process, make a heap at least three feet by three feet by three feet. Use a mixture of carbon rich brown materials such as old leaves and fresh green materials such as grass clippings, moisten it to be like a wrung out sponge, and turn it occasionally to add air to the pile and remix the ingredients.

Eventually, you will have compost which means the particles are no longer identifiable and have made a crumbly brown material.
