Afternoon sun tends to be hot and so you would look for plants that can withstand both heat and full sun. For easy plants for a large outdoor container you might consider red salvia, blue salvia "Victoria", zinnias from the Pinwheel series, "Wave" petunias, or marigolds. You can mix and match. since you are just beginning with container gardening, you might look at a book or two about it. One I like is "Container Gardening for Dummies" because it is very straightforward and includes clear instructions as well as plant lists for herbs, veggies, annuals, and so on.

For an easy indoor plant in a container, you might try a rubber plant, a schefflera, a dracaena, a philodendron, a spider plant or an asparagus fern. You might also want to look at a book or two about houseplants to get a feel for how to care for them. Another book in that series, "Houseplants for Dummies" is a good one for getting an overview and profiles of the indivdual plants.
