I have (had) a beautiful dwarf split leaf japanese maple tree and some critter chewed off the bark from the ground through the trunk of the tree. Only the ends of the branchs have bark. Is it ruined? What can I do to save it?

I really appreciate your solution.

I am very sorry about your tree. If the bark is completely gone in a circle around the trunk then there isn't really any way to save the tree.
