I live in zone 6, and have clay/sandy soil. I would like to know, how will lily of the valley do planted under pine trees? Do they like an acid or alkaline soil? Do deer like or avoid them? and how fast does it spread?.
Thank you.

Lily of the valley needs shade and a rich, moist, organic soil to grow well. Under the right conditions is is almost invasive. Unfortunately, the soil under pine trees tends to be very dry and poor because the trees soak up water and nutrients and block rain from reaching the ground. For this reason I would not expect lily of the valley to survive there.
