The Q&A Archives: Cutting Back Blackberry Bush

Question: I purchased a blackberry bush last spring and had a nice crop of berries. I thought I read that I must cut back all branches in the fall. Unfortunately, I even cut the ones that were new last year. Will I get any fruit this year, or did I "screw-up" and have to wait another year?

Answer: Blackberries are produced on current year's growth that sprouts from last year's canes. I don't think you hurt your plant, but you may have a very sparse harvest this summer!
