| Unfortuately I let my avacado grow up (too late found I can pinch the top!) and it is about 5 foot tall now, has lost all of its bottom leaves, is stick supported so it wont fall over, and has many very beautiful leaves on top (the stem is gaudy). Question: can I angle cut the stem below the beautiful foliage and put it back in the soil and will it continue to grow?? Or will the 'cut' grow up again or will it die? I would appreciate any advice!!! |
| This plant is actually a rather large tree. I suspect that cutting it off at this point might kill it but if it managed to resprout at the base, then you could pinch it back regularly to control the size for at least a while. It would also be difficult to root the tip cutting, but if the alternative is to discard the plant it is always worth a try, I think. You might try using a rooting hormone for the cutting, setting the pot inside a clear plastic bag (to maintain humidity) in a bright location but out of direct sun and using some gentle bottom heat. Open the bag periodically to allow for air circulation and do not fertilize until some sturdy roots have formed. Have fun with your tree(s)! |
