| We live on the side of a hill and the soil stays wet much of the time. We also have a lot of trees. Our lawn is soaked and isnt growing very well. As a matter of fact moss seams to be growing better. What would be the best seed to use in a very wet, shady conditions? |
| Would you consider using something other than lawn to cover the area? There are some ground covers better adapted to moist, shady conditions; I think you ll have trouble getting any kind of grass to grow well there. Shade tolerant ground covers to consider are ajuga, pachysandra, and periwinkle. You could mix in some perennial flowers, such as astilbe, to brighten the area. If you really want grass, can you remove some of the lower branches so that the area receives a little more light and air circulation? And/or grade the area so the water drains better? Also, have a soil test done; moss growth can be a sign of acidic soil. You may need to apply some lime to raise soil pH. If you can dry the area out a bit and adjust pH, you may be able to grow some grass; your local garden center may sell a special shade grass mix. |
