I have a large cat topiary frame standing 3 feet long, 1 foot wide and 3 feet tall. What is the best plant to use inside this frame to give the densest most detailed look? I'm planning to plant 4 shrubs - one at each foot/leg. I'm not terribly fond of boxwood as I find it smells like urine. Any other suggestions? I've heard that Yew is good but can not find the specific variety of Yew that is best. Thank you, Michelle

If it's a sunny spot, how about lavender or heather at the feet of your topiary? Some quick growing vines suitable for your topiary include English Ivy, evergreen Clematis, Ficus pumila (creeping fig), jasmine and Lonicera (honeysuckle). Of these suggestions some have glossy leaves, some have dull green leaves and the leaf sizes vary. What you choose will determine whether you want your topiary to make a big, bold statement, or be an understated element in the garden. Whichever you decide, enjoy!
