| The preferred time to transplant (or divide) peonies is the fall. You would prepare the new planting area in advance, selecting a site with good soil, good drainage and a sunny location. Dig the peony roots carefully so as not to damage them, taking the entire clump if possible and as many roots as you can, and replant at the same depth as they grew before. Depth is very important with peonies, if they are planted too deep they will not bloom, but they also need to be deep enough (about two inches) to be happy. You might be able to transplant them successfully in early spring as well if you do it carefully and water faithfully to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Mulch around them to keep weeds down and help retain soil moisture. In either case, peonies do not like to be moved (they can live in one spot for decades) and usually won't bloom for a year or two after being moved. |
