The Q&A Archives: Forcing Bulbs

Question: How do you force bulbs for a Mother's Day bloom???

Answer: Unfortunately it would be a bit late in the season to start now, and in any case the bulbs are not likely to be available right now. Most bulbs to be forced are planted and then chilled for about three months until they have rooted and begun to grow. Then they are brought into a cool bright area to force the flowers to open, this last stage usually taking about another month. If you are hoping to produce something for the coming holiday you might look into a cheerful pot of cool season annuals such as violas or pansies. If you purchase a pack of small plants now and pot them up, they should fill in and look great by the holiday.
