| How should I prepare my roses (climbing, hedge and rose tree) for the winter? |
| First of all, keep your roses well watered through the fall season. Hedge (shrub) roses tend to be hardy, and need little care beyond annual pruning and topdressing with compost. Climbing vary in their hardiness. Large-flowered climbing and rambling roses are the hardiest, and require that their crowns be buried in 1-2 feet of soil. Climbing 'sports' are very tender, and require uprooting and winter 'burial' of the entire plant. Your tree rose should also be laid in a trench and buried under 6-8" of soil. After the ground freezes, cover the soil with a layer of straw or evergreen boughs. Or, create a cylinder around the tree and pot after its leaves have fallen, and fill it with leaves or straw. Remove protection in spring when danger of killing frost has passed. Hope this helps! |
