Hi, my question is, are clay pots better then plastic pots for planting tomatoes plants? I am going to buy the Burpee Burger tomatoes plants. Also I am planning on using miracle grow potting soil for these plants, should I mix that with other planting soil or is it alright to use all miracle grow soil? How deep fo the roots on these Burger tomatoes grow, will a 5 gallon pot be big enough? Thank-you Don |
A 5-7 gallon pot will be just fine for your Burpee Burger tomato plant. You can use Miracle-Gro potting soil exclusively to fill your pot - no need to add other soil. Clay pots are good for plants with preferences for fast-draining soils, because clay wicks excess moisture from the potting soil. On the down side, because of the wicking and evaporation of moisture, clay pots will need more frequent watering, especially during hot weather. If you use a clay pot be sure to check your tomato plant daily and water as often as necessary to keep the soil moist, but not soggy wet. |
