I was wondering what are the steps to be taken to plant flowers in a 5.5 gallon galvanized steel tub. Can it be done? Do I have to drill holes in it or do I just use it as a planter and put flowers that are already in pots in it? It is such a pretty tub that I would like to use it this spring! Thanks!!! |
Tubs such as this should have a hole in the bottom for drainage if you plant directly into it. You should also raise it up off the ground slightly to encourage air flow beneath it and help reduce heat build-up during the hottest season. These tubs make dandy containers. You could also nestle preplanted pots into it and pad them with soil or moss to help insulate and hide the sides of the pots. Since rain and run-off from watering the pots would accumulate, you would still need to make a drain hole in the bottom of the tub or else be prepared to disassemble it and pour out the excess.
