A grass lawn is the prototype for a ground cover that can withstand foot traffic. Other plants that can take a low level of traffic occasionally would include assorted varieties of creeping thyme, low growing varieties of sedum, chamomile, and the evergreens English ivy and Vinca minor (periwinkle). Adding stepstones to the most frequently trampled spots can help keep the groundcover looking good.
