I started seeds indoors in a plastic tray with a transparent cover. When should I remove the cover?

The cover serves to maintain humidity. As soon as seeds germinate, the cover can be removed or propped open. The plants will need air circulation to avoid fungal problems, and when placed in direct sun, the cover could cause overheating akin to what happens in a parked car.
