| When we moved into our house 8 years ago, there was an attractive Fiveleaf Akebia growing around a pole in the backyard.I "let it" creep along the ground, thinking it made a nice groundcover, but unfortunately it has now completely taken over a U shaped area approx 200 sq feet total. In its wake, it has consumed 2 spirea bushes and various ornamamental grasses and has put down thousands and thousands of runners everywhere. The runners are firmly attached and nearly impossible to pull up. Unfortunately now the vine is getting dangerously close to a couple of Japanese maples that I don't want to lose. The roots are a nightmare to dig up and I think the best solution is to kill the vine, but have no idea how to go about it. The vine seems to be nearly indestructible and is allready turning green despite the very cold nights and chilly days. I don't want to use a chemical that could reach the maples or evergreens in the vicinity but I have to get rid of the vines. I need advice!! thanks! |
| You could try using an herbicide containing glyphosate at the concentration for brush. Use it very carefully and follow all of the label instructions including those for ambiant temperature or it may not work. This is a contact herbicide and will damage neighboring plants, so you may have to apply it using a wipe-on method rather than spray in some areas. You may also have to use it more than once to achieve control;sometimes a fall application when the plants are creating root stores is more effective than spring when the plant is pre-primed to grow.
