I had a vegetable garden last year. I would like to try an herb garden this year. I have a 6x6 piece of ground. Half of it is sunny the other half is shaded. What would be best to plant? Do you have a suggestion of a good book that would help a beginner? Thank you. |
Most herbs are relatively easy to grow so if you have had success growing vegetables you should have good luck with herbs. Parsley, chives and basil will tolerate some shade and like a slightly rich soil that is evenly moist yet well drained. Mint will also tolerate shade and prefers a moist rich soil but should be planted in a container because it is invasive in the garden. Sweet woodruff and lemon balm (a mint relative)are other spreaders for shade. Sage, lavender, oregano, French tarragon and thymes will do well in full sun in soil that is well drained. You might also try some annuals such as dill or cilantro, and some nonhardy plants in containers such as rosemary, lemon grass or a bay tree.
