Dear Expert Gardener: I just bought some Lily of the Valley, and some lily bulbs. The planting instructions just say plant in Spring. That is a very wide range! I am in zone 5. Your site also says the same. What I need to know is what should the soil temperature be, or may I plant them as soon as the ground has thawed? Thanks. Marlene

Plant them as soon as you can so they can settle in and come out of dormancy with the season. In the meantime keep them cool and dry so they don't try to sprout.
