What method can I use to keep my dogwood tree alive? The bark is crumbling off and it looks moldy.

Sometimes dogwoods will have a greenish moss or lichen type growth on the bark surface and it is not something to worry about. Other times, especially if the bark is coming off, there can be a serious problem. Dogwoods are susceptible to borers and diseases and are also very sensitive to mower or other injury to the trunk. You might want to take some photos to your county extension (548-3447) for a more specific diagnosis of the cause of the problem and suggested means of dealing with it. I'm sorry about your tree.
