Sirs...I have planted eleagnus as foundation shrubs and have been in for approx. 2 years now. I have periodically snipping and clipping as the shoots grow longer. My question is this....Is now a good time to shape these shrubs with the new Spring growth on them, or should I wait until the growth gets bigger? My second question is this....Should these foundation shrubs which are planted along the front of my house be shaped into a ball (rounded) or shaped into a solid hedge. Or is it a matter of preference? Thank you for your help in this important matter.... |
There are several different types of eleagnus but they all require regular and frequent trimming to keep them small enough to grow as a foundation plant. The trimming will not hurt them but it will in all likelihood remove the blooms and consequently prevent the plant from fruiting later in the season. The shape is, as you surmised, a matter of personal preference. |
