How will this tree survive or grown in a grey colored clay type of soil?

Magnolia requires a rich, moist, well drainng soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Your tree will perform best if you amend the planting hole and adjacent soil with organic matter prior to planting. Once the magnolia matures it will tolerate less than ideal conditions, but it's important to get your tree off to a good start.
