I have a bloodgood dwarf japanese maple. Is early spring ok
to prune it?

Maples are trees that will gush sap in the spring, so you might want to wait until early summer to prune it. Pruning of these particular trees is usually limited to a minimum such as correcting crossing branches or removing damaged limbs.
