I live in zone 5 and am putting up a chain link fence on an acre of sloping
ground. It gets morning sun. I would like to plant grape vines on the fence.
I need some advice to get started.

Thanks!

. Grapes do well in many soil types and with only average fertility; a slightly acid pH is preferrred. In selecting a site, keep in mind grapes always require full sun, good air circulation and good soil drainage. (Many grapes are planted on slopes because the drainage is improved and the airflow is also good.) Any soil preparation should be deep because grapes are extremely deep rooted. To determine what is needed for your particular site in terms of fertilizing or soil preparation you will need to run some basic soil tests first. Your County Extension (444-7804) should be able to help with the tests and interpreting the results. They should also be able to suggest varieties known to do particularly well in your area.
