The Q&A Archives: Pruning Hydreangers

Question: can you please tell me how i should be pruning my hydreanger bushes. in the past, i've always cut them low. now i'm hearing otherwise. can you help? thank you.

Answer: The answer to your question depends on what kind of hydrangea you have. They typical large leaved hydrangea blooms on the previous year's wood, so you would only prune it right after it blooms. Other types, such as Hydrangea arborescens "Annabelle" should be cut off at the ground because they bloom on the current season's new growth. If your plant has been blooming well with the treatment you have been giving it, then continue doing what you have been doing.
