In Spring 2000, I planted a host of birdhouse gourd seeds in my perennial bed. They never started. However, in the exact same locations where I planted them, I now have new plants, but they don't match the description I've been given as far as their being birdhouse gourds? Each individual growth is approximately 12" in diameter now, and has dark green elongated oval shiny leaves. Each new leaf grows up from the center and finds it's place in the circle? I can't figure it out, and also can't leave them in my perennial bed much longer, unless it's something I intend to grow? Any help? The leaves have no silvery fir, and are not "spade-like" in shape. I'm at a loss? Any pix of possible gourd seeds that would start to resemble what I've got? Thanks. Susan |
This does not sound like gourds, they would in any case vine rather than grow from a center crown. They would also tend to germinate later in the spring when the soil is much warmer, usually late enough that it is after the last frost date. You might want to research some fo the typical weeds for your area and see if any look familiar. |
