| I have a few large clumps of a very large leaf hosta. How and when should I divide them? |
| Hosta is best divided in very early spring, but it can be done at any time during the growing season. You may dig up the entire clump taking as much of the root ball as possible or simply cut straight down into the clump with a flat spade and take out a section. Separate the plant into sections each with several crowns and roots; a piece about one fourth the size of the original clump will make a huge lovely plant this season, smaller pieces will grow into smaller plants this summer. Replant immediately at the same depth as it grew before and water well to settle the soil. Keep the plant well watered until it becomes reestablished. If you took a division and left the mother plant in place, replenish the soil in the resulting hole. |
