The Q&A Archives: Shady Rock Garden

Question: What can I plant in a shady rock garden? The soil is shallow and tends to be acidic. I was thinking of adding some topsoil around the rocks.

Answer: You didn't mention if it was partial shade or full shade, which would make a difference. I like sedum and echevaria (hens & chicks, but there are many varieties) in a rock garden, as well as small bulb plants such as crocus, allium and glory of the snow. Hepatica is a pretty little plant that will take full shade.
