I am trying to grow really tall sunflowers. Any tips or ideas. Can a person stop sunflowers from heading out so that they would grow taller? Would high rates of N make taller sunflowers?

The best indicator of height would be to select a tall growing variety such as Mammouth. Overall health would also be important, so incorporate lots of organic matter such as compost and possibly well aged stable manure and bedding into the planting hole. Be sure to prepare the planting area deeply and allow plenty of room for the plant to develop. Full sun and even moisture are also important for fast and sturdy growth. You might need a ladder to pick them. Good luck with your sunflower!
