Children, and even many adults, tend to think more is better when it comes to watering. But plant roots need air as well as moisture, and can rot if the soil stays too wet. A reliable method for checking when the plants need water is the "finger test." Teach your child how to gently poke her finger into the soil, to the side of the plant. If it feels dry about 1 inch down, then it's time to water. Use slightly warm water (65 to 80 degrees F) and water until a little dribbles out the bottom of the pot. If possible, water in the morning to avoid condensation on the leaves at night.
